一方、男子シングルスでは、観衆の期待を背負ったデンマークのホープ、ヤン・ヨルゲンセン選手（世界12位）が、格上のインドネシア、タウフィック・ヒダヤット選手（世界５位）をストレート（21-19,21-19）で破る番狂わせを演じ、地元でＳＳ初優勝を果たした
デンマークには、欧州チャンピオンで長く世界ランク上位を維持する33歳のベテラン、ピーター・ゲード選手（世界２位）がおり、今大会も第１シードで優勝最有力候補と目されていた。しかし背中の故障から、大会直前になって出場を辞退。地元ファンを落胆させたが、代わりに11歳若い次世代のヨルゲンセン選手が見事な活躍を見せる結果となった
